A Sad Day July 19, 2010

Filed under: Life — Lacey @ 10:20 pm

Today is a sad day in the Bourne house. We have had to lay a family member to rest…our dear friend, Nemo the goldfish. Unfortunately he started struggling to swim and seemed to strangely be paralyzed on one side of his (or her?) body. I thought he would die sooner since he seemed to be struggling for a couple days…and I told Seth he needed to do mouth to mouth. He obviously refused.

I’m actually surprised that this is the first fish that died. We bought 5 fish for a dollar many months ago. The guy at the pet store argued with me saying that the fish wouldn’t survive long in our fish bowl since it doesn’t have a filter. But we have officially proven him wrong! Now we have 4 surviving fish…Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, and Marlin. As you can see, we’re quite creative with names in our house. We never really seriously named them because I didn’t expect them to live this long…and they all pretty much look the same. Orange, orange, orange, and one has a little black on his fins. That, and we got them when Haddie was obsessed with Finding Nemo. So, the names seemed fitting.

Well…I guess its time to go give Nemo a ride on the porcelain express. And to clean out the fish bowl for the other Nemos. I don’t think I’m going to tell Haddie one of them died. I figure that she hasn’t noticed the one floating all day (yes, I’ve left it there for a few hours), or even struggling to swim the past couple days. And, seriously, goldfish aren’t that special to get her upset…or to attempt to explain death yet. Maybe with the next one.

Great names for the fish! We won a couple gold fish at a local festival a few months ago and they only lasted a week. Levi named them Nemo and Dorothy (Elmo’s fish). However, every fish he sees he calls “Nemo.”
