Candy & Stickers October 27, 2010

Well, we are still stuck in the potty training cycle. Quite a while ago, Haddie learned to go potty in her potty chair and the “big” toilet. But progress came to a complete stop once she accidently went poop in the potty and freaked herself out. Well, she actually did it 3 days in a row and then avoided the potty at all cost for about a month or so. Then she started occasionally going pee again.

We bought some super cute Dora underwear, which she was totally excited about. And I might add, I thought she looked super cute in.

She did pretty good for a few hours wearing them (probably because I made her try to go every 30 min or so). And then we had 3 accidents in a row. Including poop, and one pee that she slipped on…sounds sanitary, yes I know….

Then she again avoided the potty. She started asking to go occasionally, including at restaurants and to the nursery workers.

We started a sticker chart and giving her candy (fruit snacks…since she can’t have chocolate like in M&Ms). 1 of each for #1, 2 for #2. She’s yet to get 2 at a time.

She still gets rather excited about getting stickers and candy. Whenever she has to go she shouts “stickers and candy, stickers and candy.”

But we’re at an impasse. She sometimes will go in the potty, but other times refuse. Sometimes she still asks to go potty when we’re in stores and such and actually goes (although she absolutely hates the hand driers!). Sometimes she even complains when she pees in her diaper and won’t sit down. She knows that she’s not supposed to go potty in pull ups, so she usually won’t want one on. So…the question is….do I force her and pressure her to go potty more in the toilet or do I just give her more time? She obviously seems to understand the concept, but maybe she’s not completely ready? She’s only 26 months. So I know I have more time…. Anyone have any advice? Opinions?

I am going through the exact same thing with my daughter. However she is a lot older. She just turned three and likes to go on her schedual. She started learning to use the potty at about 20 months and has had such slow pregress. I have tried just letting her run around in her diapers and take her every 20 mins to the big potty. She likes the Hia Hao Undies, but still prefers to use the pull~ups. She gets really proud when she goes on the potty, and gets her stickers and m&m’s for going. #2 she’s pretty consistant with getting to the potty. But for the life of me i can’t get her to consistantly go #1. We have good days and not so good days. She seems to do better at my mother in laws house or out in resturants or stores. Or if other kids come over and use the Potty. I think in your situation i would give her a little time and a lot of praise for when she does go. I took Ava to the book store and got her potty books and that did seem to help a litte also. Good Luck, and happy training!

wait! we tried 3 times in the spring/summer with t, and no dice. and suddenly, he just got it. i’d say stick with diapers for a couple more months, and encourage any interest she shows, but just kind of lay off….then try again in a few weeks and go from there. i really think now that the whole “they just need to be ready” is so true. and i think with the positives she’s shown so far that she’ll get it soon. 🙂
