Homeschool Planning (Preschool) September 7, 2011

Filed under: Homeschooling — Lacey @ 10:49 pm

Last week I sat down with cousin and planned out how we’re going to homeschool our 3 kids (2, 3, & almost 4 yrs old). She had previously taught in a preschool so she still had some of the information such as goals at each age, basic curriculum breakdown ideas, etc.

Here’s the goals she created for her 4 yr old and that I’m going to work on with Haddie, too. The idea is these are the different skills, knowledge that we want them to have at the end of the school year (by end of May).

Goals for 3 & 4 yr olds

  • Know colors
  • Count to 20
  • Count by 10’s to 100
  • Know full name (write)
  • Know address & phone #s
  • Show where we live on a map (and others)
  • Alphabet (verbal, write & recognize)
  • Shapes (be able to identify)

Here’s how we decided to break down the different subjects between the two of us.  These will probably eventually change as we add more families to our homeschooling group. You’ll notice that the 3rd column has some of the ideas we’ll probably try to incorporate in each of the subjects.  Of course, we’ll probably add a lot more as we go.

Subjects

Teacher

PE Covered enough in their typical preschool/toddler activities.Also-Haddie’s dance class, and possibly swimming lessons
Bible Individually Will be covered in some subjects, but also will be taught by both families and in church

Math Adrienne #s, counting, graphing, grids, shapes, patterns, basic reasoning, sorting
Science Lacey Bugs, gardening, cooking, weather, senses, parts of the body, animals, planets
Geography Point out basic places on map (where they live, where other family lives, where animals are from, etc).
History Currently covered in Bible. Will eventually start more (maybe 1 & 2 grade level?)

We used the basic curriculum themes for each month from the preschool model.  Each month we are going to focus on 1-2 numbers, 2-3 letters, a shape, 1-2 colors, a Bible story and a science theme.  Here’s what we’re planning for now.  As you’ll notice we haven’t filled in all the details as far as Bible story and science theme in every month.  We’re also going to try to tie in the shapes, numbers, letters and colors into all aspects of the teaching as possible.  You’ll also notice that there are some ideas that we’ve jotted down that we might use.  I’ll probably try to post some of the lesson materials (at least for the science and languages) as we go.  So, feel free to copy whatever if it’ll work for you!  I’d love our work to benefit others. Sorry if some of the charts are squeezed too close.  I had it right, then it switched and I can’t get it right again. Arg.  At the end of the post are the links to download all these charts for yourselves.
